Peak
Trip

5:30 Up before the sun for an early breakfast of cereal, granola
bars, and oranges. You need an early start to avoid the afternoon showers.
6:00 Secure the campsite and pack daypacks with warm clothes,
rain poncho, water, and food.
6:15 Hit the trail as the sun begins to dry the morning dew.
Hike up past timberline for a breathtaking view and a morning snack
of trail mix.
11:00 You reach the top of a 13 or 14,000 foot peak with plenty
of time to spare. Looking at the world from this angle and glancing
back down the trail gives everyone an amazing sense of accomplishment.
11:30 Begin the hike down. Maybe the group will find a snowfield
to slicker slide down!
3:30 Back to the campsite to relax or explore before dinner.
6:00 Help the counselors cook a trail meal and tell stories about
today's adventures and those to come while you eat.
Dark Crawl into sleeping bags under starry skies for a good night's
rest.
Utah
Desert Canyon Trip
7:30
Up and at 'em! Crawl out of your sleeping bag for a wonderful trail
breakfast.
8:00 Prepare for the day by dividing up the group gear and food,
packing your backpack, and cleaning up camp.
8:30 Strap on your packs and hit the trail. Today, you'll be
hiking through some beautiful desert sandstone canyons. If you keep
your eyes peeled, you'll probably be lucky enough to see a natural arch,
Anasazi ruins, or even some ancient rock art!
10:30 AAHHH
a desert oasis; the perfect place for your mid-day
siesta. Enjoy the next couple of hours lounging in the shade, eating
a scrumptious lunch of homemade banana bread, GORP, apples, and jolly
ranchers, and feeling lucky that one of your counselors is a lifeguard
so you can take a dip in the water to cool off.
2:00 Refreshed, you can hit the trail and continue up the canyon
to your campsite for the night. You'll be nestled in the shade of juniper
and piñon pine trees, with the scent of sage floating gently
with the breeze.
5:00 As you follow the sun it melts behind the canyon walls,
turning the sky a brilliant orange. The temperature changes from the
afternoon heat into the cool air of dusk
a great time to stop,
set up camp, and help your counselors cook dinner.
Dark If there's a full moon tonight, you may want to go for a
short "night hike". By moonlight the canyons come alive with
silhouettes of desert brush cast on the canyon walls. At the end of
the box canyon your counselor might tell you a story of Native American
vision quests. After that, crawl into your sleeping bag in the group
tarp or under the blanket of stars and have sweet dreams about further
explorations tomorrow.
Water
Trip

8:00 Rise and shine! Help your counselors prepare a tasty breakfast
of pancakes, bacon, and maybe even some hot chocolate.
9:00 Get your campsite cleaned up, apply your sunscreen and hit
the water. You'll either be tubing down the Dolores River, exploring
McPhee Reservoir by canoe, or rafting the Lower Gunnison River with
professional guides in your two-man "duckie".
12:00 Take a break from your day on the water and treat yourself
to some lunch and maybe a short siesta.
3:00 Back on the water to explore a waterfall or play some afternoon
water games.
6:00 Arrive at camp, and maybe do a little crawdad hunting while
your counselors prepare yet another tasty meal. Tonight it's stir-fry
with fresh broccoli and peppers, rice, and banana boats for desert.
7:00 Help clean up dinner, play some games, tell some stories,
or maybe even enjoy a campfire with s'mores.
Dark Hit the hay and enjoy the sound of water splashing as you
fall asleep. Rest up; there will be even more to do tomorrow.
