Dear CSC Friends: In October of 2001 we were very proud to announce the creation of the Craig I. Colvig Fund, an addition to the CSC Scholarship Fund that has helped provide financial aid, or "camperships", for many campers who would not otherwise have been able to attend camp. Providing these opportunities has always been an important part of the CSC mission and the majority of the funding for the current 8-10 camperships had been coming directly from the CSC budget. Many of you have made contributions to this effort over the years and we thank you heartily. However, outside funding has been sporadic without a formal entity or donation process that could provide tax advantages. While investigating the possibilities for an entity that would enable tax benefits and honor my late father, Craig I. Colvig, a founder of CSC committed to scholarships, I was contacted by the John Austin Cheley Foundation. This foundation, a tax-exempt charitable organization created by the alumni of a Colorado camp similar to ours, invited CSC to become one of five camps to which they would send campers. "The purpose of the Foundation is to provide a mountain summer camp experience for children whose resources are not adequate to cover the cost of camp fees and transportation." Discussions progressed and we announced our approval as a member camp of the JAC Foundation, and the creation of the Craig I. Colvig Fund within the Foundation. With related ideals we felt that this relationship would provide the quickest and most significant means to achieve our goals for the Fund. Initially, campership awards to campers attending Colvig Silver Camps will be provided by current contributions to the CIC Fund and to the Foundation. However, over time, we expect annual contributions will not only provide two or more camperships annually, but also will allow the Fund to become an endowment. Contributions made by the CSC "family" will go directly to the CIC Fund to benefit campers attending CSC. Last fall I was able to attend a John Austin Cheley Foundation meeting and was very impressed with the Trustees and their level of dedication to the Foundation's purpose. They made a commitment to the CIC Fund from its inception by offering to fund two campers for the summer of 2002 and two for the summer of 2003, to allow the Fund to grow. The two campers scheduled to attend CSC in 2002, were delayed until 2003 because of the fires. Two more campers will attend in 2003, with all four camperships funded by the Foundation while the CIC Fund grows. Thereafter we will determine the most sustainable course for the Fund. We hope that it will be able to send two campers a summer and also build to endowment levels. We are very proud to be part of a camp community that in its first year was able to provide funding for more than two campers. For those that contributed, thank you. We would like to extend an invitation to become involved in this effort as we are reminded, daily now, how critical a camp experience can be in human development. Your contribution honors the positive life skills and self-definition experienced at CSC. You can contribute any amount at any time, in your name, in a camper's name, in a counselor's name, or in an alumni's name. Please indicate "CIC Fund" clearly on any contribution to ensure that those made by the CSC "family" will directly benefit campers attending CSC. You can also help by contacting us if you discover any outstanding candidates for CSC campership consideration. You can act as a sponsor, someone who finds a qualified candidate and helps them through the campership application process. We are excited about our relationship with the John Austin Cheley Foundation. There are many families that cannot afford the cost of a summer camp for their children. Through the Foundation, deserving campers can be given the opportunity to experience the benefits of our type of summer camp. As most of you know firsthand, the experience you provide these campers will last them a lifetime and we thank you from the bottom of our hearts and theirs for your involvement in this effort. We greatly value your care and what it adds to the CSC community. Please join the Foundation by making a contribution to the Craig I. Colvig Fund. Your contribution will be put to good use. From the Red Creek Valley, we send our love and best wishes. Sincerely, Clay Colvig THANK YOU! Dr.
