Cost
of a new sleeping bag?.... $190
New backpack?.... $150
Camping utensils? .... $6
Cost of cleaning camper's clothes after the summer? .... Forget it!
Value
of a total camping experience at Colvig Silver Camps? .... Priceless!
Some
things in life are priceless. For everything else there's MasterCard.
Dear Camp Families and Friends:
As you probably know,
the tragic wildfires of this summer have stolen a priceless experience
from hundreds of CSC families - campers and staff. Due to the location
of the fires around Durango, the speed of their advance, and the related
smoke hazard, CSC, after an evacuation on the second day of camp, determined
that it would not be able to operate safely for the majority of the summer.
You can well imagine summer 2002 also dealt a horrendous blow to the financial
health of the camp.
At this time we don't
know what kind of disaster relief and other financial assistance will
be available to help CSC dig out of this fiscal abyss, but in the best
of scenarios, camp will struggle without your help.
So it is we ask each
of you to join the circle of long-time CSC believers and help out. We
must ensure that the summer of 2002 will not be the last "Summer
of Significance" in the mountains of Colorado. "Hand in hand"
we must work together to make summer 2003 not only a reality, but, in
fact, "the best summer ever" at CSC!
A firefighter who
was stationed a few nights at the lodge left a note for anyone from camp.
Part of it read, "Every night we come back and check all around this
camp. We saved all [the buildings] one time. We're trying to avoid a second.
Feels good to us to cheat the fire, we feel the kids should not be cheated
out of a place to come to." You can help cheat the fire in another
way.
After 33 continuous
years of camp's operation, now is the time to ask not what CSC can do
for you, but what you can do for CSC. You can be sure, the return on your
investment in CSC's future will pay substantial dividends in the lives
of campers and staff.
What can YOU do?
PAST FAMILIES: Write
a check to CSC. Specify how you would like the money to be spent, or just
say, "I wish it could be more!"
NEW FAMILIES IN 2002:
Consider paying for all or part of the lost experience, and think of it
as an investment for the future of your family and friends.
POTENTIAL FAMILIES
IN 2003: Consider pre-paying in full for next summer now, and know that
you have secured a spot for healthy fun and lasting friendships.
POTENTIAL CAMPERS
2003: Between now and next summer, work to earn part of your summer camp
tuition, and help your family help you!
EVERYONE:
(a) Help get the word out to the many camp friends that have not been
in touch with camp recently and may not know about the fire situation.
(b) Recruit one new camper for 2003. Let's have a waiting list by Christmas!
(c) Pray for lots of rain this summer in Colorado and lots of snow this
winter - lots!
(d) Write a letter to CSC telling them what the camping experience has
meant to you and your family.
Just how special is
CSC? Some years back a mother of a mentally challenged lad wrote a letter
to camp as her son was about to return for the umpteenth summer, this
time as a "special assistant counselor (SAC)." She wrote, "Each
year I send my son to school for nine months to find out what he does
not know. I send him to CSC for nine weeks to find out what he DOES know!"
EVERY child who attends
CSC finds out good things about her/himself. EVERY child discovers new
inner strength. EVERY child uncovers hidden treasures of the heart. EVERY
child!
With thanks to those
who have and will join us in this effort, we remain
hand in hand,
