Homestead is built to resemble an old west town with an Assay Office, Livery and First Frontier Bank. Four to six campers live together in gender-specific cabins with a head counselor, and possibly an assistant counselor. Following the old west theme, Homesteaders cook their own breakfast each morning over an open fire and do ranch chores, such as feeding chickens, sheep and pigs. During their two week session they will participate in choice-based traditional summer camp activities as well as two wilderness trips during the session--an overnight near their cabins and a three-day desert, alpine, or water trip. For many Homesteaders, this is their first extended stay away from home and/or introduction to wilderness camping.

"Ruth and I wanted to write you a quick note to express our extreme satisfaction with Hartley's first camp experience. Your assertion regarding the length of the camp term was absolutely "dead on". Had the term been shorter, he might have come home with an ambivalent or worse yet, a negative attitude about summer camp." Instead, he settled in, learned a lot and achieved considerable personal gain." - Parent, Scottsdale, AZ

Silver Saddle is an all-girls program located in the heart of the CSC site. Girls from all over the country attend four week sessions to experience the beauty of southwest Colorado. While in camp, Saddle girls live in a cabin with three to five other campers and one head counselor. Assistant counselors also bunk with campers. Silver Saddle girls spend roughly half of their session participating in traditional summer camp activities and half of their time on wilderness adventure trips (up to 5 days in length). Our choice-based format allows beginners and veterans alike to enjoy new experiences and challenges. Silver Saddle will share time with its 'brother camp' Silver Spruce, as they eat meals together, have weekly dances and share one coed wilderness trip. This mix of in-camp activities and wilderness adventure blends the best that summer camps have to offer.

"Sammie has always come home with a keen appreciation for nature, her surroundings and other people's feelings." - Parent, Glencoe, IL

Silver Spruce campers come from all over the U.S. to join 20-40 other boys in a four week program. Campers live in the Spruce 'tree houses' with three to five other campers and one head counselor. Assistant counselors also bunk with the campers. Spruce boys will spend roughly half of their session enjoying in-camp activities, and the other half on wilderness trips. This choice-based program allows beginners and veterans alike to pursue their interests and to be challenged by new and different experience levels. Spruce boys will interact with their 'sister camp', Silver Saddle, as they share the dining hall, have weekly dances and go on one coed trip together. By mixing traditional in-camp activities and wilderness adventure, Spruce boys get the best of what summer camps have to offer.

"Strong attempt to make the camper feel self-confident, in a safe and supportive environment. The campers feel they can take risks and grow. My son returned very self-assured - loved his counselor and friends. You guys are just the best!" - Parent, San Francisco, CA

GRADES 8-9 COMPLETED, COED

Outpost is a coed wilderness-focused program, with campers spending roughly three-quarters of their four week session on various wilderness trips. While in camp, Outposters have time to rest, enjoy hot meals, showers, and participate in traditional summer camp activities. Outposters live in gender-specific bunk houses with three to five other campers and one head counselor. Trips consist of roughly ten people, including two staff members. At this level, campers are asked to begin taking a leadership role on expeditions as staff instill a sense of cooperation and leadership in all group members. Trips are structured in a progressive manner from shorest to longest, and campers are able to choose trips of varying difficulty levels. This is a great step up for our Silver Spruce and Silver Saddle groups and also a great primer for our Pathfinding program.

"Martha came home and was 'camp' sick for a while. That's how much she missed the kids, staff and daily activities." - Parent, Mt. Joy, PA

GRADES 10-11 COMPLETED, COED

FIRST TERM: JUNE 14- JULY 10, TUITION $4160
SECOND TERM: JULY 15 - AUGUST 10, TUITION $416

Pathfinding is the culmination of the CSC wilderness experience. A small coed group (8-10 including two staff) spends four weeks "on the trail" in several different environments. We meet with them at scheduled intervals to restock their food and supplies, and to check on their progress. Participants are required to take leadership roles such as group leader, navigator and cook throughout the session. A typical session includes desert backpacking, rock climbing, alpine backpacking, mountaineering, individual "solos" and "group solos". Campers not only finely tune their 'no trace' wilderness skills, but work hard toward improving skills of cooperation, leadership and positive group dynamics. The Pathfinding program offers an emotionally and physically challenging environment, through which campers grow and develop both as individuals and as a group. Campers leave this program with memories and achievements that last a lifetime.

"The kids always come home from camp relaxed and happy. As the years go by, it becomes clear that camp has had a powerful influence on their lives. They certainly have no trouble leaving home for college, and all three possess a spirit of adventure which can surely be attributed to camp." - Parent, Belleville, IL
