It has always been an important part of the Colvig Silver Camps mission to help deserving campers who don’t have the financial means attend our program. We believe that the summers of significance that we have provided our community since 1969 should be available to as many people as possible. Towards this end we have consistently used 1-2% of our budget to bring 8-10 campers to the CSC experience. Donations to CSC earmarked for the internal CSC Scholarship Fund continue to help this effort.
In 2001, in an effort to increase funding for these opportunities, we became an associate camp of the non-profit John Austin Cheley Foundation (JACF) and partnered to create the Craig I. Colvig (CIC )Fund. While investigating the possibilities for an entity that would enable tax benefits and honor the late founder of CSC, Craig I. Colvig, we were contacted by the John Austin Cheley Foundation. This foundation, a charitable 501 (c)(3) foundation established in 1989 by a group of alumni from a Colorado camp similar to CSC to send children to summer camp whose family resources are not adequate to cover the costs, invited CSC to become one of six camps to which they send campers. Their purpose matched ours, “Funding need-based camperships for high potential youth to attend extended-stay wilderness summer camps that have a proven track record of positively impacting youth development”, and we determined that this partnership would be the most effective way for us to achieve our goals. The Craig I. Colvig Fund was created within the foundation to allow CSC donors to assign donations to be used for CSC campers and we began to host two campers sponsored by that fund and the JACF general fund.
Through this continued partnership our goals have been far surpassed. In addition to the 8-10 campers we continue to fund through camp, the Foundation now typically sends 20 campers a summer to CSC. The CIC Fund has grown to a full endowment level, funding one camper per year in perpetuity. Three other fully funded endowments for CSC campers have been established, one honoring alumni and JACF board member Alan Ater’s late parents, Reverdie and Jean Ater, one honoring the late Rob Perkins, a camper and counselor at CSC, and the last in the name of Mary Colvig Miller, a CSC founder. A Director’s Fund has been created, in honor of Tom “Frosty” Frostman, Jim Colvig, and Cameron Colvig, former directors of CSC. And 4 CSC alumni have served on the JACF board. We are grateful to everyone who has so graciously donated time and money to this effort. There are campers out there making the world a better place because of you!
We would like to extend an invitation to anyone interested in becoming involved as we are reminded, daily, how critical a camp experience can be in human development. Your contribution honors the positive life skills and self-definition experienced at CSC. You can contribute any amount at any time, in your name, a camper or counselor’s name, or an alumni’s name. Please indicate “CIC Fund” or “Director’s Fund” clearly on any contribution to ensure that those made by the CSC community will directly benefit campers attending CSC. You can also help by contacting us if you discover any outstanding candidates for CSC campership consideration. You can act as a mentor, someone who finds a qualified candidate and helps them through the campership application process. You can also become involved on a board level and help with the Foundation’s transition from a volunteer board to a supervisory board.
We are excited about our relationship with the John Austin Cheley Foundation. There are many families that cannot afford the cost of a summer camp for their children. Through the Foundation, deserving campers can be given the opportunity to experience the benefits of our type of summer camp. As most of you know firsthand, the experience you provide these campers will last them a lifetime and we thank you from the bottom of our hearts and theirs for your involvement. We greatly value your care and what it adds to the CSC community. Please join the Foundation and Colvig Silver Camps by making a contribution. It will create beautiful days for so many people.
