A Day Camp at Colvig Silver Camps.Sign Up!
With over 50 years of experience in personalized outdoor growth and adventure at Colvig Silver Camps, we have designed a day camp consistent with our core focal points. Our program focuses on physical, social, and emotional connection, with themselves, each other, and the world around them.
Fun is the medium. Our 600 acre site and the adjacent expanse of the San Juan National Forest are our playground. From our basecamp of three large tents, our “players” embark on one or two week adventures that uniquely combine the various activities around camp with guided free-play. These activities include problem solving at our challenge course, swimming and boating, horseback riding, creek sloshing, climbing, and target sports.
Our approach requires a 3:1 camper to staff ratio, small group size, and carefully selected staff. Trained staff connect individually with every camper in a small groups, capped at 10 this summer. As our players journey through the day, they have ample time - even within the activities - to explore and let their imaginations roam. This effectively facilitates a process of discovery rather than dictate a curriculum. In this manner our players’ choices become an integral part of each day’s adventure.
The additional focus on free-play allows dynamic opportunities for players to grow and develop. It is an active and intentional return to ways that children used to learn how to learn. In the “Clinical Report on The Importance of Play,” the American Academy of Pediatrics lists the many benefits of free-play for children:
In this way they achieve our goal, connecting with their surroundings and themselves. They return to what we once knew was the best thing for them to do in the summer…
Each session has a conceptual idea to inspire the players’ imagination and guide their wonderings and wanderings within that session’s structured activities. What a typical day looks like:
In the ever-changing world of Covid and Covid regulation, we continue to develop Covid 19 policies and procedures based on guidance and relevant data from the Centers for Disease Control, San Juan Basin Public Health Department, and the Colorado Department of Human Services. As we approach the summer we will finalize plans based on best practices and the most recent regulation and data and will ask our families to join us in maintinaing that plan to keep our participants and our program safe throughout the summer. As a preview, we expect our approach to look similar to school mitigation - cohort sizes of 10, masks and distance inside or in close proximity outside (both will be rare), contactless drop off and pickup, and enhanced cleaning protocols as examples. As information surrounding health and safety continues to change, we will provide updates about our planning here on our website.
